AU, IGAD Reaffirm Commitment to South Sudan’s Peace and Democratic Transition

The African Union Commission (AUC) and the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) have jointly reaffirmed their strong support for South Sudan’s ongoing journey toward peace, national unity, and democratic governance.

The declaration followed a two-day official visit to Juba by AUC Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, from 5 to 6 May 2025, conducted in close coordination with IGAD. The visit aimed to engage South Sudanese leadership and key stakeholders on the country’s evolving political and security landscape, and to assess progress in the implementation of the Revitalized Agreement on the Resolution of the Conflict in the Republic of South Sudan (R-ARCSS).

During the visit, Chairperson Youssouf held high-level meetings with President Salva Kiir Mayardit and other senior officials, focusing on preserving the gains of the peace deal, fostering inclusive national dialogue, supporting the transitional roadmap, and strengthening governance institutions.

The AUC head also met with regional and international partners, including the African diplomatic corps and TROIKA representatives, to bolster coordination and promote a united front in supporting South Sudan’s transitional efforts.

In a joint statement, the AU and IGAD emphasized the critical role of peace, stability, and inclusive governance in South Sudan’s sustainable development and integration into the region. They highlighted the importance of mutual trust, national cohesion, political openness, and continuous dialogue.

Reaffirming their long-term support, both bodies pledged to work closely with the government, civil society, and international partners to ensure effective implementation of the R-ARCSS and to promote a future rooted in unity, resilience, and prosperity.

“The African Union and IGAD remain fully committed to working collaboratively with the Government and people of South Sudan…to safeguard peace and uphold the principles of the R-ARCSS,” the organizations stated.
