Kenya Launches Kidney Transplant Services at KUTRRH with Two Successful Surgeries

Kenya has officially launched kidney transplant services at the Kenya University Teaching, Referral and Research Hospital (KUTRRH), marking a major advancement in the country’s healthcare sector. The facility successfully conducted its first two kidney transplant surgeries on May 7 and 8, 2025, with both recipients and donors reported to be in stable condition and recovering well.

Speaking during the official launch on Friday, Principal Secretary for Medical Services Dr. Ouma Oluga hailed the milestone as a significant step towards enhancing specialized healthcare locally. “This milestone reflects our commitment to expanding specialized healthcare services locally and reducing dependence on overseas treatment,” he said.

The establishment of the transplant centre is the culmination of a three-year initiative involving intensive staff training, acquisition of specialized equipment, and international collaboration. Notably, KUTRRH staff received training at Apollo Hospital in India, one of Asia’s leading centres for transplant services.

The inaugural procedures were conducted in collaboration with kidney specialists from Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH), who will continue offering mentorship as KUTRRH strengthens its internal capacity.

One more donor-recipient pair is set for an upcoming transplant, while eight additional pairs are currently undergoing evaluation. The surgeries have been supported by the Social Health Authority (SHA), easing financial barriers for patients and promoting equitable access to life-saving treatment, in line with Kenya’s Universal Health Coverage agenda.
