Business Unusual: MPs to scramble for 70 seats in new Corona Parliament order

National Assembly building will now be allowing a maximum sitting capacity of 70 Members of Parliament per session, inorder to maintain the social distancing guidelines.

This is part of the Parliament speaker Justin Muturi’s effort to ensure that the regulations set aside by President Uhuru Kenyatta are adhered to.

Each of the 70 seats has been assigned a number. Whenever the House is scheduled to hold a sitting, the Clerk shall notify Members using the BULK SMS solution or other means, asking them to register their desire to attend the particular sitting.

However, the Majority and Minority Party leaders, deputy Speaker, Majority and the Minority Party Chief-Whips, and a member scheduled to Move a Business listed in the Order Paper will be allocated special seats.

The parliamentarians have also been cautioned against moving or changing seats, and approaching the speaker’s table for any reason.

Other measures include the restriction of the press from accessing the facility, urging all teams to obtain footage from Kenya Broadcasting Corporation.

The House is expected to sit and deliberate on President Uhuru Kenyatta’s directive to ease the burden on Kenyans by reducing taxes and in some situations, exempting taxes to improve the prices of commodities.
