1,300 Litres of Chang’aa Seized in Kisii as Authorities Crack Down on Illicit Breweries

A multi-agency operation led by officers from Magena Police Station and National Government Administration Officers (NGAO) has resulted in the seizure of 1,300 litres of chang’aa in Riokari Village, Magena Sub-Location, Kisii County.

The early morning raid on May 30, 2025, uncovered the illicit alcohol and various brewing apparatus at a local homestead. Authorities confirmed that the suspected owner escaped arrest, but a manhunt is currently underway.

The recovered substances and equipment have been secured as exhibits, and investigations into the illegal operation continue.

The National Police Service (NPS) issued a strong warning to individuals engaged in the production and distribution of illegal alcohol, citing the grave health and safety risks associated with such brews.

“Let this be a warning to all who flout the law. We will not relent in our mission to eradicate illicit alcohol that continues to destroy lives and families,” a police statement read.

This raid is part of a broader government campaign to eliminate illegal liquor operations, particularly in rural areas, amid concerns over rising cases of alcohol-related health complications and deaths.

Authorities are calling on residents to cooperate by reporting suspicious activities and promoting legal, safe, and regulated trade in alcoholic beverages.
