Police: Over 100 Phones Stolen During Madaraka Day Celebrations

Over 100 mobile phones were reported stolen during the 62nd Madaraka Day celebrations held at the Raila Odinga Stadium in Homa Bay, prompting a swift police response.

According to County Police Commander Lawrence Koilem, two suspects were arrested and at least 12 stolen phones had been recovered by Sunday evening.

The thefts occurred primarily at night as large crowds surged into the stadium for the national event.

Criminals are believed to have deliberately created commotion at entry points, causing people to shift back and forth.

Amid the confusion, unsuspecting attendees lost phones, wallets, and other valuables.

Even journalists were not spared. Nation Media Group’s Homa Bay correspondent Gorge Odiwuor lost his phone at the stadium gate, while another journalist was robbed of a laptop while entering the venue.

“The suspects were found in possession of multiple phones and a wallet. We believe they are part of a larger syndicate targeting crowds during public events,” said Koilem.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has taken over the case, with officers urging anyone who lost their devices to report to the nearest station and assist in the ongoing investigation.

Security at public events has once again come under scrutiny, with the public calling for better crowd management and surveillance.

Police have promised enhanced measures for future events to prevent similar incidents.

Authorities continue to pursue other suspects believed to be part of the gang responsible for the mass theft.
