Data Protection Commission Launches National Awareness Campaign

The Office of the Data Protection Commission (ODPC) has launched a nationwide sensitisation campaign aimed at raising public awareness on the significance of protecting personal data.

The initiative was unveiled during a stakeholder engagement meeting where Data Commissioner Emmanuel Kasait underscored the critical role of both institutions and individuals in upholding data protection standards. He urged all data handlers to strictly adhere to the provisions of the Data Protection Act, warning that misuse of personal information for personal benefit constitutes a legal offense.

“Any form of data misuse will not be tolerated. We are committed to enforcing the law and ensuring that the rights of data subjects are respected,” said Kasait.

As part of its compliance strategy, the ODPC announced plans to conduct data inspections across various sectors, including education, hospitality, and property management. These inspections aim to assess whether organizations have put in place the necessary safeguards to protect personal data.

The Commission reaffirmed its dedication to promoting transparency, accountability, and responsible data handling practices as it seeks to build a culture of trust in the digital age.
