Isiolo Governor Abdi Hassan Guyo will be tried by the full Senate after a dramatic special sitting on Monday saw plans to form an investigative committee crumble on the floor of the House.
The motion, which had been tabled by Kakamega Senator Bonny Khalwale on behalf of the Majority Leader, collapsed when Kilifi Senator Stewart Madzayo, expected to second it, rose in opposition instead—effectively blocking its passage.
With the committee option off the table, Senate Speaker Amason Kingi ruled that the governor’s impeachment case will now proceed to a full plenary hearing, scheduled for July 8 and 9.
This means that all senators will participate in examining the evidence and making the final decision on whether to uphold the Isiolo County Assembly’s resolution to remove Governor Guyo from office.
The embattled governor was impeached last week by 16 out of 18 MCAs in Isiolo County, a move that has intensified political tensions in the region.
The County Assembly has accused him of overstepping his mandate through irregular appointments and flawed procurement practices, and of presiding over a county where development projects have ground to a halt. Governor Guyo has dismissed the allegations as baseless and politically motivated.
Monday’s rejection of the special committee has set the stage for a high-profile political showdown. By opting for a full plenary, the Senate has made the proceedings more visible and politically charged, with each senator now expected to take a stand publicly. The hearing is likely to attract national attention, particularly because of the allegations of constitutional violations and gross misconduct.
Governor Guyo now faces an anxious countdown to what could be a decisive moment in his political career.
