NLC Begins Two-Day Mission in Makueni to Resolve Historical Land Injustices

The National Land Commission (NLC) has kicked off a two-day fact-finding mission in Makueni County aimed at addressing long-standing historical land injustices.

Led by NLC Vice Chairperson Getrude Nguku, the delegation from Nairobi is examining 14 active land cases, with plans to verify documentation and conduct site visits to assess the extent of the disputes.

Nguku emphasized the importance of mediation as a more effective and timely route to resolving such matters, urging affected parties across the country to embrace dialogue over litigation.

During a courtesy call, Makueni Governor Mutula Kilonzo Jr. welcomed the NLC team and cited stalled projects such as the Manooni and Mulima dams as casualties of unresolved land issues, particularly those delaying access to clean water and development.

He also called for expedited resolution of the protracted Ukai land case, which continues to impact operations at the South Eastern Kenya University (SEKU).

“Justice delayed is justice denied,” Mutula said, pledging full support from the county administration to facilitate the commission’s mission.

Present at the meeting were Lands Executive Dr. Paul Musila and County Attorney Stanley Nthiwa. The NLC team included Commissioner Tiyah Galgalo and Head of the Historical Land Injustices Secretariat Edmond Gichuru, among other officials.

The visit marks a significant step in addressing land-related grievances that have persisted for decades, with the hope of unlocking progress in affected communities.
