Learners at Ilako Mututa Mixed Secondary School have received a lifeline following a generous donation of essential supplies after a fire gutted the school’s only girls’ dormitory at the start of the second term.
The devastating blaze forced the school to send affected students home for two weeks, and while learning has since resumed, many girls are still reeling from the loss of personal belongings and disrupted routines.
Hope was rekindled when the Child Welfare Society of Kenya (CWSK), in partnership with Kitui West MP Edith Nyenze, visited the school with a consignment of relief items. The donations included maize, beans, rice, cooking oil, blankets, school uniforms, personal hygiene kits, bedsheets, and school bags, critical supplies aimed at helping the students recover and continue with their education.
CWSK, a government agency under the Ministry of Labour and Social Protection, responded through its emergency relief programme as part of its broader mandate to protect and promote child welfare nationwide.
Principal Jeremiah Mutukaa expressed heartfelt gratitude for the support, revealing that the school had been on the verge of closure due to food shortages and financial constraints.
“We are truly grateful for this generous gesture from Child Welfare. These items will go a long way in helping our school move forward and complete the term on a strong note,” he said. “We’ve faced a difficult period, and the fire only made things worse.”
MP Nyenze, speaking during the visit, reaffirmed her commitment to supporting residents of Kitui West, particularly in times of crisis.
“When our people are in pain, we stand with them. That is leadership, and that is service,” she said.
CWSK representative Lucy Kuria emphasized the organization’s commitment to ensuring learners from disadvantaged backgrounds are supported.
“Most of these students come from needy backgrounds and lack basic needs, that’s why we deemed it fit to visit and share with them,” she noted.
The donation has brought renewed optimism to the school community, as staff and students work to restore normalcy and finish the academic term strong.
