Kenyans have redeemed Bonga points worth Ksh. 131million since the launch of Bonga for Good in just three weeks – By Prudence Wanza.
The initiative was launched on April 3 as a 30-day package where users can redeem the bonga points into money which can be used to shop for household items.
In a report by Business Daily, the teleco said 60 percent of payment redemption made under its one month Bonga for Good offer took place at supermarket tills which could be attributed to the tough economic times with many households running out of cash.
“The Bonga for Good initiative is to empower Kenyans to use the savings they have been making by using Safaricom products over the years to meet their needs to pay for their essentials or donate to the most vulnerable in the society,” Safaricom CEO Peter Ndegwa said.
More than 10,500 customers have used the offer daily since its launch translating to a daily redemption of 26 million Bonga points worth Ksh7.8million.
With the hard economic times ongoing in the country due to the Coronavirus pandemic more customers are likely to continue using bongapoints to cushion themselves.
The impact of the Coronavirus shutdown has led to job loses with daily wage earner being the most affected.
Most businesses have closed down and the measures by the government to combat the disease such as the night curfew for the next 21 days have largely hit the economy
