Two Suspects Arrested in Eldoret Over Qatar Job Scam Targeting Youth

Police in Eldoret have arrested two men accused of orchestrating a fake job recruitment scam that defrauded over 100 young people with false promises of employment in Qatar.

The suspects were apprehended by officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) on Tuesday evening as they collected money from unsuspecting victims at Silver Line backstreet in Eldoret. According to police, the pair operated a bogus recruitment agency, convincing job seekers they would be flown to Qatar for work opportunities.

After collecting money, the victims were told they would be transported to Nairobi for processing and eventual travel. Each of them had paid Ksh. 2,400 as a “registration fee.”

Later that night, over 100 affected youths gathered at Eldoret Central Police Station, demanding refunds and justice. However, police urged them to return the following morning to officially record statements as investigations into the scam began.

Authorities are now probing the full extent of the operation and whether more individuals are involved. The arrested suspects remain in custody as DCI officers continue their inquiries.

The incident has sparked fresh warnings from local officials about the rise of fraudulent overseas job schemes targeting unemployed youth desperate for better opportunities. Police are urging the public to verify the legitimacy of recruitment agencies with relevant authorities before making any payments.
