Interior and National Administration Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has issued a stern warning to government officers allegedly colluding with rogue traders to promote the sale of second-generation alcohol and illicit drugs in the North Rift region.
Speaking in Kapsabet Town, Nandi County, during the launch of the 19th Jukwaa la Usalama grassroots security forum, Murkomen decried what he termed as “an unholy alliance” between certain government officials and unscrupulous business people. He said the government is determined to dismantle such networks that have fueled the distribution of harmful substances.
“We are putting on notice any Chiefs, Assistant Chiefs, police officers, or other public officials who are abetting this menace. They will face serious consequences,” Murkomen declared.
He noted that counties like Nandi are being targeted due to their high population of young people in learning institutions and rural villages. The Interior CS said a region-wide crackdown is underway, specifically aimed at eliminating the sale and abuse of second-generation alcohol and drugs.
In a move aimed at strengthening local administration, Murkomen also announced that six new administrative divisions would soon become operational in Nandi County. He observed that the county had been left behind in previous national efforts to decentralize and expand governance infrastructure.
Murkomen was accompanied by Nandi Governor Stephen Sang, Tinderet MP Julius Melly, Emgwen MP Josses Lelmengit, Aldai MP Marianne Kitany, and East African Legislative Assembly MP Zipporah Kering, among other local leaders.
