Portugal has formally declared its full support for Morocco’s autonomy initiative for the Sahara region, describing it as “the most serious, credible, and constructive basis” for resolving the longstanding territorial dispute.
The endorsement was made in a Joint Statement issued following a meeting in Lisbon between Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates, Nasser Bourita, and Portugal’s Minister of State and Foreign Affairs, Paulo Rangel.
The statement affirms Portugal’s recognition of the strategic importance of the Sahara issue for Morocco and commends the Kingdom’s efforts within the framework of the United Nations to find a “just, lasting, and mutually acceptable political solution.”
Both ministers reiterated their support for UN Security Council Resolution 2756, which calls for a realistic, pragmatic, and enduring resolution grounded in compromise. The resolution reinforces the role of the parties involved in advancing a peaceful settlement.
Portugal’s position aligns with growing international support for Morocco’s Autonomy Plan, which has gained momentum under the leadership of His Majesty King Mohammed VI. The initiative proposes limited self-governance for the Sahara region under Moroccan sovereignty.
By joining the expanding list of nations backing Morocco’s stance, Portugal underscores its alignment with global efforts to end the dispute and foster regional stability and cooperation in North Africa.
