CHAN 2024: DR Congo Land in Nairobi Ahead of Blockbuster Clash with Harambee Stars

Two-time African Nations Championship (CHAN) winners, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo), arrived in Nairobi on Thursday morning ahead of their opening Group ‘A’ showdown against tournament co-hosts Kenya on Sunday.

The Leopards touched down at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) aboard an Air Tanzania flight and are scheduled to hold their first training session later this evening to help the players acclimatize and recover from the journey.

DR Congo will kick off their CHAN 2024 campaign against the Harambee Stars in a sold-out clash at Kasarani Stadium on Sunday, with kick-off set for 3 PM. The match marks a historic moment as Kenya makes its tournament debut on home soil.

Speaking shortly after arrival, head coach Otis N’Goma praised the warm Kenyan reception and expressed confidence in his team’s readiness.

“We feel excited for the warm welcome that we have received at the airport in Nairobi,” said N’Goma. “We had a good time in Tanzania preparing for this great tournament. Our players are in good condition and ready for the task ahead.”

N’Goma, who is aiming to guide DR Congo to their third CHAN title, said his team is fully focused on asserting their dominance in a group stacked with strong sides.

Leading the charge for the Leopards will be TP Mazembe’s dynamic forward Oscar Kabwit. Known for his power, speed, and sharp finishing, Kabwit is expected to play a crucial role in unlocking Kenya’s defense. His versatility, whether as a central striker or from wide areas, adds a dangerous dimension to DR Congo’s attack.

DR Congo last lifted the CHAN trophy in 2016, when they triumphed 3-0 over Mali in the final in Kigali, Rwanda. They remain one of the most successful teams in CHAN history, having also won the inaugural tournament in 2009.

Group ‘A’ features co-hosts Kenya, defending champions Morocco, who arrived in Nairobi earlier this week, Zambia, DR Congo, and Angola. Angola are expected to arrive later today ahead of their opening fixture against Morocco on Sunday at Nyayo Stadium, scheduled for 6 PM.

As anticipation builds across the region, CHAN 2024 promises to deliver high-stakes football and showcase some of the best homegrown talent on the African continent.
