U.S. President Donald Trump has announced the deployment of two nuclear submarines to undisclosed regions, in response to what he termed “highly provocative” statements from former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev.
Medvedev, currently serving as Deputy Chairman of Russia’s Security Council, warned the United States on Thursday to remember Russia’s Soviet-era nuclear capabilities.
His remarks, seen as a veiled threat, sparked an immediate reaction from Trump.
In a statement posted on his social media platform, Trump said: “Based on the highly provocative statements of the Former President of Russia… I have ordered two Nuclear Submarines to be positioned in the appropriate regions, just in case these foolish and inflammatory statements are more than just that.”
He added, “Words are very important, and can often lead to unintended consequences. I hope this will not be one of those instances.”
The move marks a sharp escalation in rhetoric and posture between Washington and Moscow, raising tensions over nuclear deterrence and global security.
Russian officials have not issued an official response.
