Mombasa United Appoint Veteran Gilbert Selebwa as Head Coach in Ambitious Promotion Push

Mombasa United have ushered in a new era with the appointment of veteran tactician Gilbert Selebwa as head coach ahead of the 2025–2026 National Super League (NSL) season. Selebwa replaces outgoing coach Hamadi Said, with the coastal side aiming for a strong promotion bid to the FKF Premier League.

Confirming the appointment, club CEO Nick Arunga expressed optimism about Selebwa’s arrival, describing it as a major step toward rebuilding after a disappointing 2024 campaign that saw the team finish 16th with just 37 points, narrowly escaping relegation.

“We had a tough season, but we’ve taken the lessons to heart,” Arunga told Citizen Digital. “Bringing in Coach Selebwa, one of the most respected names in Kenyan football, is a huge step forward.”

Selebwa brings a wealth of experience to the club, having previously managed NSL sides such as Samwest Blackboots, Luanda Villa, and Congo Boyz. His deep understanding of the league and tactical expertise are expected to inject much-needed discipline and competitiveness into the squad.

“With his vast experience, we believe we can have a solid season and make a serious push for KPL promotion,” Arunga added.

The club is also actively strengthening its roster, targeting top talent from rival NSL teams while organizing open trials to scout emerging players from Mombasa, the Coast region, and beyond.

“We’re throwing the doors open,” said Team Manager Gilbert Wesonga. “Friday and Saturday, we’ll be holding trials at the Refinery Grounds. We’re inviting players who believe they have what it takes to compete at a high level.”

Selebwa, alongside assistant coach Andrew Kanuli and the entire technical bench, will be present during the trials to evaluate and select players. The club has emphasized competition, discipline, and ambition as the cornerstones of its pre-season preparations.

With renewed leadership and a clear vision, Mombasa United are determined to rise from last season’s struggles and stake their claim among Kenya’s football elite.
