Panic gripped Kangu village in Mwea-East, Kirinyaga County, on Thursday evening after armed thugs attempted to carjack a businessman outside his homestead.

The victim, identified as John Bundi Ndambiri, said the ordeal happened at around 8 p.m. while he was waiting at his gate.

According to him, two assailants suddenly forced their way into his vehicle. One tried to push him out while another, wielding what looked like a weapon, threatened to shoot.

“I realised he was holding a hammer, not a gun. I raised the alarm and dashed out of the car before they could overpower me,” Ndambiri recounted.

His loud cries attracted neighbours and passersby, forcing the suspects to abandon their mission. In retaliation, angry residents set fire to a car believed to have been used by the gang, vowing not to tolerate rising insecurity in the area.

Local leaders and residents said the businessman, a well-known rice farmer in Mwea, may have been trailed earlier in the day before the attempted attack.

Police officers from Wang’uru Police Station, backed by local administrators, later arrived at the scene and confirmed that investigations had been launched.

The suspects reportedly fled into nearby farms, and a manhunt is underway.

Authorities have urged residents to remain vigilant and cooperate with police as they pursue the attackers
