Kenya has officially kicked off its campaign to secure re-election to the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Council under Category C for the 2026–2027 term.

The bid was launched under the leadership of Cabinet Secretary for Mining, Blue Economy and Maritime Affairs, Hassan Ali Joho, and underscores the country’s commitment to strengthening maritime safety, environmental stewardship, and the sustainable blue economy.

Ambassador Josephat Maikara, representing Principal Secretary Dr. Korir Sing’oei, reaffirmed Kenya’s leadership role in implementing IMO instruments and championing Africa’s maritime agenda. “Kenya’s bid is about advancing the aspirations of our entire region and ensuring the maritime sector remains a pillar of sustainable development,” he said.

Kenya’s campaign priorities focus on enhancing maritime safety and security, promoting marine conservation, strengthening capacity-building for developing states, and championing innovation and green shipping technologies.

The country has made significant strategic investments, including upgrading the Port of Mombasa, operationalizing Lamu Port, developing the LAPSSET Corridor, and modernizing the Bandari Maritime Academy to solidify its position as the region’s maritime hub.

Kenya is appealing to IMO Member States for their support to enable it to continue shaping a maritime sector that is inclusive, sustainable, and resilient not just for the nation but for Africa and the wider Global South.
