Passenger train services to Mombasa’s Central Business District have officially returned, marking a historic revival of rail transport in the coastal city.

President William Samoei Ruto, PhD, C.G.H, today commissioned the Mombasa Commuter Rail Service, a project designed to ease mobility for residents, tourists, and visitors.

The launch comes eight years after the iconic passenger service train on the century-old Lunatic Line made its final trip on April 29, 2017, ending an era that held nostalgic value for many Kenyans.

The new commuter service links Mombasa Terminus to the CBD, using the metre-gauge railway and crossing the Makupa Causeway Railway Bridge.

It is expected to offer affordable, reliable, and efficient transportation, easing congestion on roads and improving access to key parts of Mombasa Island and the Mainland.

Officials say the project will significantly boost tourism and local business by providing a convenient option for travelers heading to and from the city center.
