Murang’a Governor Irungu Kang’ata has condoled with families that lost 13 members in a tragic road accident on Sunday afternoon, September 28, 2025, near Kikopey, Gilgil, along the Nakuru–Nairobi highway.
Taking to his official X account on Monday, September 29, 2025, Kang’ata confirmed that the crash victims come from Ruchu Ward, Kandara Constituency, before he grieved with the families and friends of the departed on behalf of the county.
”Muranga County extends heartfelt condolences to the 13 persons who passed on at Nakuru- Nairobi Highway through a road accident yesterday. Let us keep the families of the deceased in our prayers. The family is from Muranga County, Kandara Constituency, Ruchu Ward,” Kang’ata said.
Talking to local media over the deadly crash, Nakuru County Police Commander Emmanuel Opuru said the victims were in a fourteen-passenger vehicle on their way to Nakuru when it collided head-on with a semi-trailer truck.
“The matatu was overtaking and then it rammed into the trailer, causing 13 fatalities and three others seriously injured,” Opuru said.
“Fatalities have been rushed to Gilgil Sub-county mortuary, and the seriously injured have been rushed to Gilgil hospital,” he added.
Opuru also confirmed that among those who sustained injuries in the accident were two children. Reports also reveal that those involved in the particular carnage had hired the particular vehicle for a family function.
