More than 4,000 families have been displaced after Lake Naivasha in Nakuru County overflowed due to heavy seasonal rains, submerging homes, farms, and schools in low-lying areas such as Kihoto and Karagita Landing.
The flooding, which has reached record levels, has destroyed crops and livestock, displacing thousands who now require urgent humanitarian assistance. The situation has been worsened by ongoing downpours that continue to raise lake levels.
Environmental experts link the flooding to increased rainfall, land-use changes, and broader climate patterns that have also caused similar surges in other Rift Valley lakes, including Baringo, Turkana, and Nakuru.
Local leaders, including Naivasha MP Jane Kihara, have called on the national government to declare the situation a disaster and to provide emergency relief and resettlement support for affected families.
County authorities are coordinating with humanitarian agencies to relocate displaced residents and assess the long-term impacts of the flooding on livelihoods, infrastructure, and the local ecosystem.
