The Judicial Service Commission (JSC) has announced that it has shortlisted 34 candidates for the position of Resident Kadhi.
In a notice on Wednesday, November 12, JSC Secretary Winfridah Mokaya said the recruitment process attracted hundreds of applicants after the positions were advertised earlier this year.
“On 9th June 2025, the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) advertised five (5) posts of Resident Kadhi. The advertisement attracted a total of 261 applicants,” the notice read.
Mokaya stated that the commission has now concluded the shortlisting stage and will announce the interview dates in due course.
“Following the review of applications, the JSC shortlisted 34 candidates. Dates for the selection interviews will be communicated to the candidates,” the notice added.
The list includes Hassan Makokha, Abubakar Muhsin Ali, Ahmed Abdulhafidh Karama, Hussein Muktar Hilowle, Osman Duba Molu, Adhan Mohamed Shide, Abdulqadir Ibrahim Alareimy, Abubakar Abdu Maka, Mohamed Ali Omar, and Ibrahim Gollo Wako.
Others are Faki Said Mkanga, Siasa Idd Ngare, Hasan Yusuf Akasi, Feisal Hatib Ali, Ashraf Onyango Saleh, Ali Salim Said, Hassan Mohamed Gure, Abubakar Jirma Duba, Abdisatar Abdi Ibrahim, and Ali Hassan Okunne.
Also shortlisted are Abdallah Ronald Akuku, Adan Ahmed Dakat, Juma Dokata Diba, Saidi Shabani Mwagoti, Yassir Abdulkadir Shaibu, Elijah Cheruiyot Maritim, Abdiwahab Sanbur Adan, Abdirahman Dekow Guhad, Adan Ali Maalim, and Ahmed Abdikarim Abdirahman.
Others are Mohamed Abdikher Kulmiye, Abdijimal Mohamed Abdirahman, Mohamed Sheikh Ismail, and Abdulkarim Abubakar Shekue.
The interviews come as the Judiciary seeks to expand its capacity following months of stalled appointments due to budget cuts.
Kadhis’ Courts are established under Article 170 of the Constitution to handle matters related to Muslim Law.
There are currently 14 stand-alone Kadhis’ courts across the country, with the rest integrated into various Magistrates’ Courts.
Their jurisdiction is strictly limited to the determination of questions involving personal status, marriage, divorce, or inheritance, but only in cases where all parties are Muslims and have submitted to the jurisdiction of the Kadhis’ Courts.
In addition to the five Kadhi positions, the JSC is seeking to fill 145 other judicial vacancies, amongst them 15 positions for judges of the Court of Appeal, 20 for judges of the High Court, and 10 for judges of the Environment and Land Court, as well as 60 Resident Magistrates and 40 adjudicators for the Small Claims Court.
The positions that were advertised on June 9 attracted a total of 1,742 applicants.
“Following the review of applications, the JSC shortlisted 598 candidates.
Dates for the selection interviews will be communicated to the candidates,” the commission announced on Wednesday.
