A resident of Loosuk Location in Samburu County has voluntarily surrendered an illegally held firearm as the ongoing government-led disarmament exercise continues to record progress.
According to the National Police Service, the individual handed over an AK-47 rifle, one magazine and three rounds of ammunition to officers at Maralal Police Station on April 15, 2026. The recovered items have since been secured in the station armoury pending further action.
The latest surrender brings the total number of firearms recovered in Samburu Central Sub-County during the current exercise to eight, alongside 31 rounds of ammunition.
Authorities say the voluntary compliance reflects growing public cooperation following the government’s directive encouraging civilians in possession of illegal weapons to surrender them.
The National Police Service commended residents who have responded to the initiative, noting that such efforts are critical in addressing insecurity and restoring stability in affected regions.
The disarmament operation remains active, with officials urging individuals still holding unlicensed firearms to take advantage of the amnesty period and surrender them to the nearest police station or administrative office without fear of prosecution.
