By Andrew Kariuki

The inquest into the death of Rex Maasai, who was fatally shot during Finance Bill protests in Nairobi in June 2024, has been adjourned to Thursday, May 28, 2026.

The matter, which seeks to establish the circumstances surrounding Maasai’s death and determine possible criminal responsibility was postponed.

Rex Maasai was shot during demonstrations in Nairobi’s Central Business District at the height of nationwide protests against the Finance Bill, sparking widespread public outrage and renewed calls for police accountability.

The inquest proceedings are expected to examine witness testimony, police conduct, forensic findings and evidence surrounding the shooting as the court works to establish what transpired on the day Maasai lost his life.

Family members, human rights groups and sections of the public have closely followed the proceedings, viewing the case as an important test of accountability in cases involving alleged police use of force during public demonstrations.

When the matter resumes on Thursday, the court is expected to continue hearing evidence and submissions aimed at helping determine the circumstances of the fatal shooting and whether any individuals should be held responsible.

The case remains one of the most closely watched protest-related matters arising from the June 2024 demonstrations.
