Paris Saint-Germain’s dramatic UEFA Champions League triumph over Arsenal has shaken up the race for the 2026 Ballon d’Or, with several football stars strengthening their cases ahead of next month’s FIFA World Cup.
PSG successfully defended their European crown after edging Arsenal 4-3 on penalties following a tense 1-1 draw in the final at the Puskás Aréna in Budapest, with Ousmane Dembélé emerging as one of the biggest winners from the night.
Dembélé scored PSG’s equaliser from the penalty spot in the 64th minute after Arsenal had taken an early lead through Kai Havertz, before the French side eventually prevailed in a dramatic shootout.

With the Champions League campaign now complete, attention has shifted to the Ballon d’Or race, where club success, individual performances and the upcoming World Cup are expected to play a decisive role.
Kylian Mbappé (Real Madrid/France)
Despite enduring a disappointing season without silverware at Real Madrid, Mbappé remains in the conversation due to his attacking numbers, having recorded 49 goal involvements. The French captain could still boost his chances with a strong World Cup campaign.

Lamine Yamal (Barcelona/Spain)
The teenage sensation continues to impress after contributing 42 goal involvements during another standout season. Although sidelined with a hamstring injury, Yamal is expected to recover in time for the World Cup as Spain eyes a strong tournament run.
Harry Kane (Bayern Munich/England)
Kane remains one of Europe’s most productive forwards, registering 61 goals while helping Bayern Munich secure a domestic treble. However, missing out on Champions League success appears to have affected his standing in the rankings.

Declan Rice (Arsenal/England)
Rice enjoyed a consistent season and capped it off with another composed display in the Champions League final, including scoring during the penalty shootout. While Arsenal narrowly missed European glory, his performances throughout the campaign keep him firmly among the favourites.
Ousmane Dembélé (PSG/France)
PSG’s Champions League success has significantly strengthened Dembélé’s Ballon d’Or credentials. The French winger delivered decisive performances during the knockout rounds and once again stepped up on the biggest stage, scoring a crucial equaliser in the final to help PSG retain the title.
With the 2026 FIFA World Cup now approaching, the race for football’s biggest individual honour remains wide open, with performances on the international stage likely to determine who ultimately lifts the Ballon d’Or.
