Chinese and other foreign firms will no longer receive the coveted National Construction Authority(NCA) certification without proof of local partners in their companies.
The certificate dubbed (NCA 1), is the highest certification for contractors by the Kenyan Government. In the new regulations, the certification will be reserved for local firms.
A senior compliance officer at the PPOA Mr. Henry Moti said the new regulation will be fully effected to curb foreign influence in Kenya’s construction boom.
Currently, several construction firms from China, Japan, Spain, Italy and South Korea have bagged billions in tenders to construct highways, infrastructure and housing projects that have spawned in the last decade.
Most of the infrastructure contracts have been undertaken by foreign companies who are favoured by job owners because of their relatively significant expertise and financial muscle.
