According to Tanzania media, Tundu Lisu is facing arrests over a plot to protest the 2020 election which saw the veteran politician lose to Incumbent President John Pombe Magufuli.

Authorities say the candidate is responsible for pockets of violence that preceded the Tanzanian polls, and was briefly arrested after the election was over.

This will be the second time Lissu is seeking asylum in a foreign country.

In his ordeal, Lissu survived an assasination, when he was shot 16 times outside his parliamentary residence in 2017.

Mr Lissu, was then stripped of his parliamentary seat while receiving treatment in Belgium for gunshot wounds.

President John Pombe Magufuli had accused the opposition of disturbing the peace in Tanzania, vowing to quell any rebellion against the government in power.

He has since been sworn in as Tanzania’s five-year term in office and has committed to enhancing his signature zero tolerance to corruption, as well as build on his infrastructure portfolio.
