Police on yesterday arrested a 16-year-old class six pupil at Shihuli Primary school, Kakamega County, for allegedly killing his teacher after disagreeing over water.

The teacher whom police identified as Maurice Khataka Shibutse, is said to have disagreed with the suspect who happen to be his immediate neighbour.

Khataka’s wife Everlyne Muhenje, disclosed that the pupil came in the morning to fetch water from their well but her husband denied him access -something that did not sit well with the suspect thus an argument ensued between them.

“When my husband declined to allow the suspect to fetch water from our well, he forcibly tried to gain entry, but he was overpowered. He then picked stones and hurled them at my husband and ran away,” claimed Muhenje.

She also added that the deceased was hit by stones on the left side of the head and unconsciously fell to the ground.

The deceased was then rushed to St Elizabeth Mukumu hospital before being referred to Kakamega County Teaching and Referral hospital. The wife noted that her husband succumbed to his injuries while receiving treatment at the hospital.

Area Chief Gerald Murunga confirmed the incident adding that they had lost a brilliant teacher.

“It’s very unfortunate that a life had to be cut short after a quarrel over water. This is a heinous act and we have lost a brilliant teacher, a husband and a father. The law will take its course notwithstanding the age of the suspect,” said Murunga.

Robert Makau, Kakamega East Sub County Police Commander said the minor was arrested and is in their custody awaiting prosecution as police continue to investigate the matter before he can be arraigned in court to answer to murder charges.
