Back To School — Experts Warn of Drop-Outs over Fees

Back-to-school season is here, for both parents and students as schools reopened for the 2021 academic year.

The mixed up academic year is as a result of the suspension of a strict school calendar that was broken by the pandemic, forcing learning institutions to close for nine months.

The schools will resume for the first term on Monday, July 26th, and will run through October 1st.

The second term runs from the 11th of October to the 23rd of December, while the third term runs from the 3rd of January to the 4th of March.

Students who have been at home since March will be promoted to grade five.

Meanwhile, the National Council of NGOs has encouraged parents and other stakeholders around the country to guarantee that all eligible children return to school.

In a press statement, its Chairman Stephen Cheboi expressed concern over concerns that some children may drop out of school due to school fees and other obstacles and urged the government to ensure that all children have access to high-quality education.

Cheboi also encouraged the Ministry of Education and school boards to take into account the predicament of needy students in order to allow them to continue their education.

The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) will present the findings of a teacher poll which will be presented during a meeting held at the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD).
