Following a tip, detectives from the DCI’s Anti-Narcotics Unit based at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport recovered a stash of narcotics hidden in two shipments yesterday.
One of the shipments from Kenya headed for Australia was labeled as African traditional earrings.
The 168 pairs of earrings would be easily overlooked by the average eye, but the astute police officers knew there was more than meets the eye.
They detected a yellow powdery substance skillfully hidden within the ornaments after a closer inspection. The powder was put through its paces.

Soon later, preliminary tests revealed that the substance was morphine.
A second shipment, described as 12 kitenge dresses, was on its way to Hong Kong, China.
The 12 reported outfits and an additional 199 buttons were seized by Anti-Narcotics Unit (ANU) detectives who opened the cargo.
They were astounded to discover a white powdery substance shrewdly secreted within the buttons upon closer scrutiny.
Preliminary examinations on the powder revealed that it was yet another banned narcotic material, cocaine.
Further examination into the confiscated consignments is underway.
