MPs Salaries Reviewed To Ksh. 710,000

The Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) has released recommended salaries for state officers on Tuesday, December 14th, for the fiscal years 2021/2022 and 2022/2023.

Members of Parliament and Senators’ salaries will be increased from Ksh 621,250 to Ksh 710,000 under the current proposed amendments.

“Unless otherwise reviewed and determined by the Salaries and Remuneration Commission, the proposed monthly consolidated remuneration package is fixed for the length of the office of the State officer in the Executive of the County Governments. In accordance with section 31(2)(a) of the Employment Act, 2007, the proposed monthly consolidated salary package is a consolidated pay including home allowance,” SRC stated.

Additionally, the allowance for legislators serving in committees would be increased, with the SRC proposing a Ksh15,000 allowance for committee chairpersons and Ksh7,500 for other members.

“Chairpersons shall be compensated Ksh15,000 per sitting, subject to a monthly maximum of Ksh240,000,” SRC recommended, “and members shall be paid Ksh7,500 per sitting, subject to a monthly maximum of Ksh120,000.”

The allowance for committee chairpersons was set at Ksh8,000 per sitting in the 2017 gazetted pay schedule, while other committee members earned Ksh5,000 every sitting. If the new reforms are passed and implemented, committee vice-chairpersons will get Ksh12,000 each.

Furthermore, MPs’ dental and optical medical allowances have been increased from Ksh75,000 to Ksh100,000.

However, the President’s remuneration remains at Ksh 1,443,750, while his deputy’s compensation continues at Ksh 1,227,188. Cabinet secretaries and governors will also keep their salaries of Ksh 924,000.

SRC also requested input from numerous stakeholders and the general public in regards to the proposed modifications, as required by law.
