Public hearings on the Political Parties (Amendment) Bill will now be held on Thursday and Friday next week, according to Senate Clerk Jeremiah Nyegenye.
Nyegenye stated all public memoranda in favour, against, or suggesting further revisions to the Bill should be forwarded to the Senate by next Wednesday, according to a public notice published in local dailies.
Speaker Kenneth Lusaka tabled the Political Parties (Amendment) Bill, 2021, for first reading on Tuesday and promptly referred it to the Senate Justice, Legal Affairs, and Human Rights Committee for public engagement.
The committee’s Chairman, Okongo Omogeni (Nyamira), indicated that public submissions on the contentious Bill, which attempts to pave the path for the formation of a coalition party, will be received on Tuesday and Wednesday next week.
On January 25, the Senate will hold another Special Session to debate the Bill, which has become the latest battleground that will decide the 2022 polls.
