The Positron Emission Tomography-Computed Tomography (PET-CT) scanner has been purchased by Our Lady of Lourdes Mutomo Mission hospital in Kitui South to aid in the diagnosis and treatment of various ailments, including cancer.

After Agha Khan Hospital, Kenyatta National Hospital, and Coast General Hospital, this is Kenya’s fourth PET-CT scanner. The CT scanner would be extremely beneficial, especially given the rising number of cancer cases in Kitui, which has been estimated to reach approximately 27,000.

Bishop Joseph Mwongela of the Catholic Diocese of Kitui presided over the event, which took place at the Mission Hospital. Bishop Mwongela used the occasion to encourage Kitui citizens to visit the hospital in big numbers for cancer screening in order to diagnose cancer at an early stage.

“We have blessed and opened PET-CT scanner which can detect diseases early especially cancer. It is the first machine here in Kitui and also in lower eastern, I would urge the people to ensure that they are regularly screened instead of rushing for over-the-counter drugs.” Bishop Mwongela said.

The Bishop also urged residents to make their health a top priority and to enroll in Universal Health Coverage to assist cut hospital expenditures.

The chair of the board of Mutomo Mission Hospital, William Maema, stated that there has been a huge number of individuals in need of CT scanning services, which is why the PET-CT scan machine will be very useful in determining people’s health status.

“Register for the NHIF and the universal health coverage that our leaders have been talking of and helping each other for those who can’t afford the insurance covers,” he added.

William further stated that because this is the first machine in the Eastern Region, more people will come to obtain health care.

“This hospital which was constructed by the catholic church in 1965 is the one which has been helping the residents of Kitui South and in terms of catchment we have patients coming from all the areas of Kitui county and that’s why we found it good to bring this machine to get services closer to the people,”
