CA Chair Kembi Gitura Resigns

The chairman of the Communications Authority (CA) of Kenya, Kembi Gitura, has announced his resignation from the post after serving for seven months to vie for Murang’a senatorial seat.

Speaking to the press on Wednesday, February 16, he noted that he handed his resignation letter to President Uhuru Kenyatta on Tuesday, February 8, in line with a directive that required all civil servants to quit before February 9.

“I tendered my resignation to President Uhuru Kenyatta for the appointment on 8th February with a view and intention of running for the Senate seat of Murang’a County. I want to make it clear that I am in the race,” Gitura said in an interview with local TV station.

Kembi also disclosed that his decision was informed by the county’s residents following an increase in requests on whether his name would be on the ballot.

The former deputy speaker of the Senate urged his constituents to consider his candidature saying he had set a track record in his first tenure.

“I think there was unfinished business. I have been there in the past and the people have tested and that is why I am asking the people of Murang’a to vote for me because they know me,” he said.

He further revealed that he was focused on ensuring the success of devolution in the county to ensure all residents have easy access to government services.

“I am a very strong defender of devolution; the importance of devolution cannot be gain-said.”

Prior to his appointment to the CA post, Gitura served as the Kenya Medical Supplies Authority (KEMSA) chairperson.

During his tenure, he was accused of influencing tenders in a scandal that rocked the country at the peak of the Covid-19 pandemic.

He, however, denied the claims arguing that Parliament had convicted him without considering his evidence. He also accused the authorities of wasting taxpayers money by planning to reopen the case that had already been closed.
