Catholic Bishop Takes Gospel To Remote Malindi

The Catholic Diocese of Malindi has embarked on a mission to build churches and missions in those region.

The main aim is to make sure that the remote areas which usually had no faithful due to the distance to reach their church now reach to them.

Malindi Diocese Bishop Wilbard Lagho said  they have opened 14 outreaches in some of the rural  parts that previously had challenges in accessing the catholic church.

On Sunday journalists accompanied the Bishop to Kilulu outstation which is in Magarini sub-county about 75 kilometers which were recently established.

The Church  was established by a few catholic faithful who had migrated from other regions in the country and bought land there. But they noticed that  there was no church to worship as the area was too interior and mostly covered by forest.

Bishop Lagho said in his first visit to the church there were so many people because it was a celebration but the number of followers keep decreasing.

However, he said the area is soon going to see many developments as many people are buying land to settle and doing Agriculture which will see the rise in population.

The bishop said with the entrance of the Catholic church many amenities are expected to follow suit including schools, hospitals, electricity, and water supply.

One of the faithful Ruth Kasili said she got another ‘migrant’ who also happened to be a catholic and he offered a piece of land where they began worshiping under a tree.

They then set up a polyethylene roof then called the father from Marafa who prayed for their church and after some time they got a donation of Iron sheets which they used to construct a small church made of the mud wall.

Today they have a place where they can worship though they still have many challenges as the church has no floor or seats and faithful improvised poles to set up sitting areas for members.

We found out that there were about 10 children, less than 10 men, and women who are attending the church every Sunday.

The Community is now fundraising to build a modern church so as to attract more followers and make the locals who previously had no faith join them in worshipping the Lord.

Currently, there is hope for expansion of the church after the fraternity of Holy Cross and All Saints establish an outstation at Kilulu which is one of the Outstations of Shakadhulo Mission which was assigned and given a mission by Bishop Lagho to set up a mission.

The mission is under Father Alan Wanyama who is also the one who conducts service at Kilulu outstation and at the same time does missionary work.

After Service Fr. Allan took us to the Mission Outstation about one kilometer away from where they are establishing the center to bring up future seminarians.

The buildings were built of mud walls and iron sheets with the earthen floor while beds were set up through modification and are not complete.

He said the area is convenient for those who will be learning priesthood as it’s cool and soon they will begin training.

Allan said they are happy to live a simple life and use the available resources locally to live which gives them a nice moment.

The major challenge he said was accessing water as the area has no water sources and they have to go for long distances to get water.

Sister Lucia Musyoka Sisters of the Most precious blood who is from the Malindi diocese but based at Kilulu outstation said they are happy to be on the mission in the rural areas.

She said it feels good to live life like the locals sharing what they have with the locals and helping the vulnerable.

Juliet Nyaga one of the faithful at the church who came from Kongowea parish but relocated to the area said being young the outstation gets very little offerings but they are optimistic that the number of faithful will increase.

She said currently they are in the process of setting up a catholic Women Association as they are 0nly two so as to urge others to join to continue praying.

Esther Sungeni said last, they expect to begin teaching to enable faithful to be baptized.
