Bodaboda Riders Urged To Comply, Restore Order

Calls have persisted that bodaboda riders must continue to register themselves in order to bring sanity to the sector even though the government lifted the crackdown order on them.

Nominated Senator  Christine Zawadi urged boda-boda operators to turn out in large numbers and register for their licenses which is now free of Charge after president Uhuru Kenyatta waived the fees last week.

The politician said many boda-boda operators previously had challenges in getting the license due to the fees imposed by the government but now there was no reason for them not to register.

Ms Zawadi was speaking in Kakoneni, Malindi Sub county during a meeting to sensitize the Pamoja African Alliance Party (PAA).

She  told the operators to visit the nearest Huduma Centre and ensure they are registered.

“We thank president Uhuru Kenyatta for waiving the license fees, I feel relieved and am so happy from the deepest part of my heart especially for the youths we know there are no jobs and majority of the youth depend on the bodaboda business,” he said.

Ms Zawadi said the youth have suffered a lot in the hands of security officials for lack of the licenses but through president Kenyatta’s directive the fees have been waived and everyone can now register.

“All the youth now should go to Huduma Centers and register for the licenses and will get the documents free of charge,” she said.

The Senator who is eying the woman representative position for Kilifi County also urged residents of Kilifi to support the newly formed political party as it was pushing for the agendas of benefiting the people including addressing land issues.

She clarified that the PAA party is pushing for acquisition of lands owned by absentee landlords so that they are allocated to locals and dismissed claims that Kingi’s administration failed to address the problem in his 10-year tenure.

The legislator said the lands in question are those owned by Arabs that have existed during pre-colonial times which has led to the coastal residents to live as squatters for decades.

“As Zawadi I fully Support PAA because of the land issues, the same way they bought huge chunks of land from the colonialists up country we also want the government to do the same here so as to end the squatter problem,” she said.

The Senator also said its time the national parks in the coastal region begin benefitting the locals like the other parks upcountry as for years all revenue collected goes to the national government.

Kilifi Assistant County Commissioner Miski Ahmed called on Bodaboda operators to ensure they follow the law to prevent accidents which could be avoided.

She also called on residents of Kilifi to stop killing the elderly for allegedly being witches saying the same will happen to them when they get old.

“Everyone is getting older each day what would you fill if you are called a witch when you grow old?” said the Asistant County Commissioner.
