The Campaign Secretariat of Deputy President William Ruto has announced that they will go to court to challenge the cancellation of the Nyayo Stadium permit for the last Kenya Kwaza rally.
While calling the cancellation a breach of contract, Josephat Nanok, the Kenya Kwanza’s head of presidential campaign, stated that they had the documents to prove that they had reserved the venue on July 9.
He claimed that Sports Kenya was forced to cancel their contract and urged the Azimio La Umoja – One Kenya Alliance to find another venue.
According to Nanok, no other political party or organization had expressed an interest in using it before they booked.
“We are prepared to challenge the Ministry of Sports, legally on August 3, because we have a signed contract. The contract hasn’t been cancelled,” Nanok said in a press conference at Ruto’s command centre at Westlands, Nairobi.
On July 12, the secretariat said it signed a contract with the organization in charge of Nyayo permits.
Nanok stated that Azimio la Umoja’s claims that they had also reserved the stadium were false and that they intend to contest the cancellations.
“We have heard that our key opponent also booked the stadium, we have realized that they have been bending the hands of the Ministry of Sports focusing them to be given that stadium and to cancel our contract,” Nanok added.
Sports Kenya denied the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) permission to use Nyayo Stadium for its final rallies on August 5 and 6 saying the venue has been booked for a peace concert.
Sports Kenya Director General Pius Metto informed the William Ruto-led alliance that they would not be able to use the venue because the dates of the peace concerts coincided with their booked date in a letter addressed to UDA Secretary General.
“We regret to inform you that due to peace concerts scheduled to take place at both Moi International Sports Centre- Kasarani and Nyayo National Stadium between 5th-7th August, 2022 the facility will not be available for your use,” Metto stated.
The Azimio campaign team also claimed on Tuesday that they had reserved the same venue for their final rally.
Junet Mohammed, Secretary General of the Azimio Coalition, issued a press release informing supporters that their final campaign meeting will be held in Nairobi on the 6th at Nyayo stadium.
“As the country approaches the general election in 20 days, the Azimio team wishes to thank all Kenyans of goodwill who have turned up in their millions all over the country at meetings, rallies and in person to join in this historic journey to a fair, just, prosperous and inclusive nation,” the statement reads.
