All boda boda motorcycles impounded in Nairobi are expected to be released by the Nairobi Metropolitan Services prior to the upcoming elections.
Mohammed Badi, the director general of NMS, announced that he will discuss the situation with Hillary Mutyambai, the inspector general of police.
“Some boda boda had been impounded, I shall consult with with IG and ensure they get released before elections,” he said.
Badi admitted that boda boda operators have been victims of rogue enforcement officers.
“Since I took over Nairobi I have worked closely with the boda boda associations. It is true that boda boda operators have been harassed by rogue enforcement officers.”
Badi declared that he will dismiss the corrupt officers after beginning disciplinary action against them.
“Nimeanza kunyorosha the rogue department and they will go home,” he stated.
Nairobi boda boda drivers have been demonstrating against inspectorate officers’ extortion.
Even after paying the Sh3,000 monthly license fee, rogue city Askaris continue to encounter the operators and demand bribes.
To restore order in the Central Business District, the Inspectorate department, headed by Mark Leleruk, launched a crackdown on matatus, boda bodas, hawkers, and parking attendants in August 2021.
More than 200 motorcycles were seized and taken to the Central police station, but they were later released.
The boda boda industry has drawn attention for its involvement in criminal activity and other anti-social behavior.
Many times, some have been accused of transporting criminals away from crime scenes.
The Nairobi City County announced in March 2021 that it would register all boda boda operators at the subcounty level in an effort to bring order and sanity back to the industry and ease regulation of boda boda activities.
As a result, each operator would be given a special identification number that would make it easier to identify them in the event of an accident or criminal activity.
Additionally, the registration would give City Hall the ability to give the riders stickers to distinguish them from riders from other counties.
