Enforce Labour Laws To Curb Mistreatment – Government Told

Seven Cotu-affiliated unions are urging the government to implement labor relations laws that have been in place but have yet to be enforced.

Led by their chairman Julius Kenya and Rose Omamo, Secretary General for the Kenya metal workers union, they observed that many issues affecting workers are lack of enforced laws that guide on employment of casual laborers or some of those under contracts.

They claim that many of these workers’ wages are not even pensionable, which violates agreed-upon laws.

They now want the Ministry of Labour and Social Services to put pressure on employers who violate agreed-upon labor laws by hiring casual workers in order to promote decent, permanent, and pensionable work.

They have once again urged the government to take up the issue of acting as a go-between between Kenya and Arab countries that offer jobs to Kenyans and to eliminate private agencies that they claim lack proper structures to protect Kenyans employed in these countries, particularly Saudi Arabia.
