The Azimio One Kenya Coalition has picked Wafula Wamunyinyi, the leader of the Democratic Action Party of Kenya, to represent the coalition in Bungoma’s senatorial election on December 8, 2022.
Raila Odinga, Azimio chief, and other coalition dons Martha Karua and Kalonzo Musyoka announced the coalition’s support for Wamunynyi on Thursday, November 3.
He was handed the certificate by the coalition’s leader Raila Odinga after he was named the sole nominee for the race.
“We want to let the country know that as a party, we will be fielding a candidate in the Bungoma Senatorial elections scheduled for December 8 this year,” he stated.
“Given the scenario unfolding in the country, an emerging one man regime, the country will need seasoned fighters in all places. Hon Wamunyinyi is our ideal person.”
The former Kanduyi MP declared his intention to replace Moses Wetangula, who resigned to run for National Assembly Speaker.
Wamunyinyi lost his Kanduyi parliamentary seat in the August 9 elections after he was defeated by John Makali of Ford Kenya.
The race pits Kenya Kwanza and Azimio in a battle for supremacy in western. Over 15 candidates have entered the by-election.
Among those running for the seat are Wetang’ula’s aide Wafula Wakoli, businessman Joseph Lendrix Waswa and Jacob Machacha, Rev Herman Kasili, lawyer Erick Nakhurenya, and former Bumula MP Mwambu Mabonga.
