Kenya To Send Second Batch of KDF Soldiers To DRC

The second batch of Kenya Defence Forces troops en route to the Democratic Republic of the Congo is scheduled to leave today, Wednesday morning.

The troops will depart from Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) for Goma, where former President Uhuru Kenyatta is currently negotiating peace with various DRC leaders.

Following National Assembly approval of their deployment to the East Africa Community Regional Force, the first batch of 900 KDF troops left Nairobi for Goma on Saturday, November 12, morning (EACRF).

Kenyan troops will be part of the EACRF tasked with combating the M23 rebels who have been causing death and displacement in the DRC for years. The troops will be based in Goma and will be responsible for combating the rebels in northern DRC.

Earlier this month, President William Ruto presented the troops with the national flag, officially approving their entry into the DRC. Ruto described the mission as urgent and critical.

Meanwhile, Uhuru has been in the country since Sunday as the facilitator of the EAC-led Nairobi Peace Process in the DRC’s Eastern region.

Beginning on Monday, November 14, the former Head of State met with local community leaders and government officials to discuss the region’s protracted security situation.
