Machakos University has been shut after rampant student protests.

Vice Chancellor Prof. Lucy Irungu made the statement in an internal memo distributed to students and varsity employees on Wednesday.

The university’s shutdown occurred just hours after a student was killed by a police officer during Monday’s protests.

On Wednesday, university students went on a rampage for the third time in record time to protest the death of a colleague.

“Due to the evolving insecurity situation around the university and the ongoing students’ demonstrations, a special meeting convened on December 7, 2022, resolved that in the interest of the security of staff and students, the university be closed with immediate effect,” the memo seen by Uzalendo read in part.

“This is, therefore, to inform all students to vacate the university premises with immediate effect. Further communication will be made in due course, ” Irungu further stated.

The document dated December 7, 2022 was signed by the vice-chancellor.
