Raila Odinga Issues Tough Conditions For Ruto

Azimio Chief Raila Odinga detailed his conditions for accepting the Office of the Opposition, as presented by President William Ruto In a letter to the National Assembly and Senate Speakers.

According to a statement issued on Sunday. Odinga accused the president of doublespeak on December 11 when he introduced constitutional reforms included in the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI).

He specifically reminded the president of his requests when he opposed the BBI, and chastised him for the abrupt U-turn.

Raila urged that Ruto follow the method outlined in the Supreme Court’s decision on the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI).

“These demands, all made personally by him, are that a president cannot initiate constitutional amendments and that all proposals for constitutional amendments must begin with the people. “…that the process of amendment must be people-driven and that the amendments must primarily focus on the interests of the common mwananchi,” the statement read in part.

The former Prime Minister slammed the president for adopting his political ideals and running with them as his own.

Nonetheless, he did not object to the suggested revisions, claiming that they addressed the same concerns that he expressed in the BBI.

Raila said that he will dispute the memorandum, noting that it was part of a strategy to provide supervision to the Kenya Kwanza administration.

“We shall continue negotiations with Azimio leadership, the legal team, and the Kenyan people to agree on how to deal with Ruto’s U-turn,” Odinga stated.

The Azimio leader claimed that Ruto’s memorandum will be included to the demands made during the Kamukunji statement on December 7.
