A Narok court sentenced a fifty-year-old man to life in jail after he pleaded guilty to defiling and marrying a ten-year-old girl.
Saigulu Ololosereka, who appeared before Narok Senior Resident Magistrate Phyllis Shinyanda, was charged with two counts: defiling a ten-year-old girl and marrying her in violation of the law in 2019.
Hon. Shinyanda added in her judgment that the man was warned of the gravity of the situation after pleading guilty to the charges, but he maintained that he married the girl because her parents had given her to him for marriage.
Shinyanda went on to explain that the crime was heinous and barbaric and that the victim had to undergo three years of agony.
According to the Senior Magistrate, the atrocious conduct had long-term physiological and physical consequences because the young girl suffered female genital mutilation before marriage and afterward had a caesarian section when giving birth.
Despite being reminded of the gravity of the violation, she saw that the accused guy showed no remorse.
He asserted instead that the young lady was his wife, whom he had married three years ago.
While reading the judgment, the magistrate stated that she had considered the age of the defiled girl, who was also pregnant, and that the man had been defiling the minor for the previous three years.
She stated that the sentence would act as a deterrent to future perpetrators.
Ololosereka was sentenced to life in jail for the first crime of defilement and three years in prison for the second offense of early marriage, all of which he will serve consecutively.
Given the gravity of the offense, state prosecutor Tito Wanga expressed delight with the sentence.
