Who is Catherine Kasavuli

Veteran TV anchor Catherine Kasavuli died aged 60 at the Kenyatta National Hospital on Thursday, December 29, after battling cancer.

The death of the decorated anchor was confirmed by KBC Managing Director Samuel Maina.

Kasavuli, celebrated as the first female TV anchor began her media career as a radio continuity announcer in 1980 at the Voice of Kenya, which was renamed Kenya Broadcasting Corporation (KBC).

In 1990, Kasavuli became part of the founding team of the privately owned television station in the country, KTN.

At KTN, the veteran anchor became the station’s first anchor to go on live broadcast, a shift from the previous pre-recorded format.

After being at KTN for 17 years, the celebrated anchor joined Citizen TV in left the station in 2007 where she later held the position of corporate affairs manager.

In 2008, she was feted with the Order of the Grand Warrior (OGW) presidential award by the late president Mwai Kibaki.

In 2015, Kasavuli retired from the limelight to work behind the screens and launched the Kasavuli Media Group.

In 2021, Kasavuli made a grand comeback and graced the Kenyan TV screens after signing a deal with KBC which saw her anchor the weekend news dubbed Legend Edition.

Kasavuli’s battle with cancer

In November 2022, Kasavuli was admitted to the Kenyatta National Hospital and was undergoing treatment for cervical cancer.

The veteran newscaster had been in hospital for a month and the news of her health had saddened Kenyans.

She also talked about her treatment, saying that her week in the hospital had been painful and also hinted at an upcoming surgery.

There was an outpouring of love and support for the beautiful anchor after the announcement in which she also appealed for blood donation and help with medical bills.
