Law Society of Kenya and the Kenya Human Rights Commission have called for justice for the victims of Karebe gold mine tragedy.
The Law Society Of Kenya (LSK) led by President Eric Theuri said that the Victims and families of the tragedy have already submitted a petition to DPP Haji seeking justice.
Mr Theuri also said that LSK has received the mothers of victims of suspects of enforced disappearance and suspected police brutality.
The LSK and KHRC were moved by the events surrounding the investigations into the deadly Karebe blast on January 23,2023.
The blast resulted to death of three people and six others seriously injured.
According to Mr. Theuri, ten suspects were arrested and arraigned at Kapsabet Law Courts on February 7,2023.
The Court granted DCI 14 days custodial order. After the investigations, the DCI made recommendations of a charge of murder against the suspects.
It is Mr. Theuri’s submission that DPP applied to withdraw the case citing areas in the investigation that were not covered.
This move by the DPP left the community and the public with many unanswered questions.
LSK alleged that the action by DPP is in violation of Article 10 of the Constitution hence eroding public confidence in the institution.
LSK asked DPP to move with speed within the next 7 days and provide answers and bring the responsible suspects to book failure to which, the legal profession will explore other options provided for under the Law.
“We ask the authorities to act within the next seven days and provide the answers that we seek. Failure to which we will explore other options as provided for under the Law.” Said Mr. Theuri.
