A chief committed suicide in Nandi after allegedly finding his wife in the act in a lodging with a police officer.

Charles Kogei, 42, a chief for Ndurio in the Aldai sub-county, died on Monday evening at a private hospital in Kapsabet.

Confirming the incident, Douglas Chikanda, a criminal investigation officer in Nandi County, described it as a love triangle involving one of his officers and the chief’s wife, who is a mother of four.

“It is a saddening case of suicide. We have indeed lost the chief. It is a case of a love triangle involving one of my officers and the chief’s wife. Preliminary probe indicates that the incident led to chief to take his life,” Chikanda said.

On Monday evening, the officer, who is stationed at Kobujoi police station, paid a visit to the chief’s wife at Sereme Town lodging in Nandi County.

The 42-year-old chief was shocked to find his wife and the police officer involved in the act.

According to a family member who spoke to police, Kogei consumed a glass of pesticide known as ‘Round Up’.

“After the discovery, he drove to his home picked the pesticide and drank.”

“We rushed him to hospital but died as he was receiving treatment at White Crescent Nursing Home,” the family member said.

The officer has since been sent on compulsory leave pending a probe into the matter.

The chief’s body was transferred to White Crescent Hospital morgue awaiting postmortem.
