A chemical or radiation weapon threat appears to have targeted the Blues owner, as well as several other negotiators.
According to sources close to Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich, he developed symptoms of possible poisoning following a meeting in Kyiv earlier this month.
In the original allegation by the Wall Street Journal, the claimed attack was attributed to hard-line Russian agents who intended to derail the peace process. The 55-year-old businessman has since recovered.
“Red eyes, continuous and painful tearing, and peeling skin on their faces and hands,” according to the symptoms. Since putting Chelsea up for sale on March 2, the Blues owner is alleged to have been traveling between Moscow, Ukraine, and Turkey.
Since the battle broke out in late February, those close to Abramovich have alleged that he has been active in peace discussions.
Indeed, he has been sighted near the Belarus-Ukraine border, and his private jets are regularly flying between Russia, Belarus, and Turkey.
The Blues owner was characterized as a “pro-Kremlin oligarch” who has had a “close relationship” with Vladimir Putin for decades and has reaped “financial advantage” and “preferential treatment” as a result of that association after being sanctioned by the UK Government on March 10.
The European Union (EU) then followed suit and sanctioned Abramovich, causing Chelsea to face difficulties in their day-to-day operations.
