Acting Governor Ann Kananu Under Fire Over Ksh. 652 Million Insurance Overpayment

Acting Governor Anne Kananu is under fire from a section of Nairobi MCAs, over her suspected role in a multi-billion insurance scam.

The MCAs are asking the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) and the Directorate of Criminal Investigation (DCI) to open investigations into Kananu and other county government officials who are accused of authorizing a Ksh 652 million overpayment to a Nairobi-based insurance company.

“We have seen the executive playing games with the health cover of staff, and the county has lost 29 staff members because they could not access the medical cover. Some county officials are trying to make money from the scheme,” Waithaka Ward MCA Anthony Kiragu claimed.

The MCAs also said that the funds were being used to support county gangs at the expense of city employees.

Kananu, on the other hand, alleged that the accusations were made by MCAs aligned with former Governor Mike Sonko.

She went on to say that their allegations were unfounded and that they lacked reasons to justify an investigation.

Kananu was named Deputy Governor (DG) in January 2021 after a contentious screening process.

She took over from the embattled Mike Sonko who is clouded in graft and abuse of office charges.
