Ministry of Agriculture has begun the aerial spraying of locusts that have destroyed crops in Meru County.

The aircraft tasked with the elimination of the locusts in Mbeere South was dispatched on Saturday.

Mbeere South Deputy County Commissioner Charles Igiha, reassured the government’s commitment to end the locust menace using controlled spraying excercises.

“The government has responded very fast and there should be no cause for alarm,” added Mr Igiha.

The locusts first invaded Kiambere and Mutuavare villages where they fed on crops and pasture, before spreading to Mariari and Mavuria villages.

Mariari and Mavuria villages are known for large scale muguka stimulant cultivation.

Kiambere MCA Lenny Masters Mwaniki said he was happy for the government’s quick response.

“The aircraft is here and spraying is going on well. Initially, my people were worried when they saw millions of locusts ravaging their crops but now they are relieved,” said Mr Mwaniki.
